Sumer is officially here, and while I’m tempted to live out my days in a comfortable pair of sandals, sometimes a good outfit requires a boot. Now, when planning out your warmer weather looks, you might not initially reach to grab the canonically fall footwear, but boots actually make for such a chic fashion choice when done right.
We’ve seen an influx of “freaky shoes” and “wrong shoe theory” online. Boots with shorts during these next few months isn’t something everyone thinks can work, but I am here to tell you all the cool girls are pairing these pieces together this summer. To get you ready, I’ve rounded up some stylish variations for you to test out. It’s a big fashion risk with an even bigger reward—here’s how it’s done.
Wear Long Shorts, Tall Boots
The World Cup is here and that means sports outfits are all the rage. All it takes is a pair of longline shorts and knee-high boots—something about the overlapping hemlines just feels instantly cool. It’s especially a fun choice for those who love the oversized look.
Lean Into High-Waisted
If you’re looking for a chance to show off your legs while still tapping into a good boot, then pairing your shoes with high-waisted shorts is perfect. It puts space between the trim of your shorts and the top of your boots, which creates proportional depth.
Play With Length
A knee-length button-up dress or oversized shirt can look shockingly stylish when worn partially open over a pair of shorts. Combine that with knee-high boots for a fun play on proportions. The contrasting lengths will do wonders to emphasize what little skin you are showing.

Cowboy boots are synonymous with short to me. As a Southerner, who loves summer, this is the optimal time to pair the two together. But if you’re more of a city girl, try out cowboy boots with these chic shorts and matching top. It’s put together but also fashion forward.

Bella Hadid has been particularly into the shorts-with-boots look. This is easily one of her best looks so far, and a prime example of what I like to call the Layered Leather Rule. Essentially, the more leather you’re wearing, the chicer you look—and the same goes for boots and shorts.
Embrace Your Undies
Recently, fashion girlies flaunted boxer shorts, granny panties, and thongs with abandon. Baggy shorts and chunky boots pair especially well with the trend, balancing out the risqué trend with a bit of added coverage.

It’s literally impossible to not look cool in a well-tailored black suit, no matter how long the hemline. Cropped co-ords can be worn with anything from heels to loafers and, yes, even boots.
Channel Scandi Style
Running shorts are the unofficial style of the summer and fans of the look are wearing them in unique ways. The athleisure staple is being matched with flouncy blouses for a playful mix of ying and yang. Add a pair of boots to the mix for an update to the whimsical Scandinavian aesthetic.
